Cracking The Periodic Table Code Answer Key
Date: Period: POGIL: Cracking the Periodic Code Why? As charts go, the periodic table is a bit odd. It’s not square and large portions of the table appear to be ‘missing’ at the top. It’s not organized alphabetically, so it can be hard to find elements. But to a chemist.

1) The element song
Daniel Radcliffe sings the element song
2) Notes on Doberiener through Mendeleev
3) Answer the following questions:
- Why did scientists try to make 'periodic tables' in the first place?
- Explain Dobereiner's attempt to organize the elements. What are advantages and disadvantages to this method?
- Explain John Newland's attempt to organize the elements. What are the advantages and disadvantages to this method?
- How did Mendeleev organize the elements? What were some advantages and disadvantages to his method?
- What did Mosely do to Mendeleev's table? Why?
- What is the 'periodic law'? How does modern periodic law differ from Mendeleev's periodic law?
- How many groups (or families) are on the modern periodic table?
- How many periods are on the modern periodic table?
- What predictions did Mendeleev make with his table? Were the predictions correct?
- Search for alternative periodic tables on the internet. Pick one that interests you. Make a case either for or against it in terms if it would be a viable replacement for the periodic table hanging in out classroom.

Design of Periodic table
You will receive a set of 20 element data cards. Each card lists some properties of a particular element.
1. Arrange the cards in order of increasing atomic mass.
2. Try deciding when a new row should start so they sort into similar properties in the same column. It will not necessarily be the same size rows.
3. Glue the cards down onto a piece of paper.
4. Use a real periodic table to decode the elements that are on each card. Hint - use the masses! Write in the atomic numbers into the card. How well did it match the real table?
5. Use google docs, spreadsheet to graph atomic number v Oxygen atoms on the data cards. Put atomic number in the A column and Number of Oxygens in the B column (if its a --, enter a 0). graph the data, use a scatter graph.
6. Is there a trend in your graph from #5?
7. Repeat step 5 put plot atomic number v boiling point
8. Is the a trend in your graph for #7?
